PRESS OFFICE TEL: 08-20092/4, FAX: 08-22671/20093 Ministry of Public Utilities, Transport, Communications and National Emergency Management, New National Drivers' License introduced
Belmopan - 03 April, 2009 The project, which started in June 2006, was made possible through partnership with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) and the government of Italy. The project is one of many initiatives that the Department of Transport is embarking on, in its efforts towards providing more efficient and effective service to the Belizean people. The Keynote address was delivered by Minister of Transport, Hon. Melvin Hulse who stated that standardizing the license in Belize makes it more efficient and accountable and now Belizeans will be able to apply and receive their drivers’ license in any district of Belize. Minister Hulse added that with the security features in place, gone are the days of forging or buying a drivers license. Commenting on the issue of road safety, Minister Hulse stated that the country can no longer tolerate inexperienced drivers and reckless driving and the introduction of the New National Drivers License is the first step to proper monitoring. Furthermore, Minister Hulse stated that with Belizeans traveling abroad regularly, there is a need to upgrade the drivers’ license as Belize is no longer in isolation with the region and the world. The New National Drivers License also paves the way for certification to combat the scourge of stolen vehicles. The National Driver’s License System will allow all Belizeans to receive a reliable, secure and internationally recognized drivers’ license .
